geochelone yniphora

The Plowshare tortoise is one of the most endangered tortises and one of the most endangered animals in the world. There are about 400 species of plowshare tortoises in the wild today. The plowshare tortoise is found on a very small northern portion of madagascar. Baly bay is a forested area of madagascar that is being heavily torm down, overall leading the deaths of many tortoises, also including the radiated tortoises, and all four species of spider tortoises. Madagascar has a very weak control over keeping animals liek the plowshare, radiated, and spider tortoises in a liveable status. Corruption and money greed leads many poor governments into carelessness of wildlife preservation. However there are many fortunate deeds to be done to assist the critically endangered plowshare tortoise. The honolulu zoo has been working with geochelone yniphora since the early 1970's. Captive breeding has had its difficulties though. The overall result they found was A.I Artificial Insemination, A.I led to overgrowth in the shells at a very fast rate in which the rest of the anatomy grew at normal rate leading to extreme mortality in later years of there lives. Not very much has been presented in breeding these unique and beautiful tortoises in captive care like they do in the wild. G.R.E.E.N is hoping to establish a funded exhibit that encloses a group of the plowshere tortoises in a complete biosphere greenhouse with computer run system that enables exact seasons, rain, heat, cool, cloud, humidity, ect... in there natural environment of madagascar. The exhibit will cover a complete 1 acre land coverage. All hope goes well for needed.
