Shipping Tortoises

April 27, 2005

The first thing you need to know about shipping your tortoise is how to place the animal into an enclosure that will keep him/her safe. You can use either a pillowcase for the strong-shelled ones or the sub adults. The best enclosure for a hatchling is a deli cup with a paper towel in the bottom and a lid to seal the top, make sure there are ample ventilation holes. Then place the animal in the shipping box with either waded-up newspaper or styrofoam insulation packed within; this secures the deli cup or small box is tightly secure and avoids loose movement.

A tightly secured tortoise ensures no damage to its limbs, head or neck. It is also wise to use packaging peanuts around the deli cup to ensure soft cushioning. Then, tape the box securely with strong boxing tape. In extreme heat during the summer months, the best thing to do is put ventilation holes in the outer box to prevent overheating and easier breathing access.

During winter months, do not put ventilation holes in the box, and do use an 18 hour heat pack to keep a steady warm temperature so the animals don’t freeze.

One of the most important things about shipping tortoises is labeling the shipping box with the following in big bold letters: LIVE ANIMALS, or LIVE HARMLESS REPTILES, or LIVE TORTOISES: HANDLE WITH CARE. It is also always a must to put arrows on the box indicating which side is up.

Recommended handlers are Delta Dash and most national air freights that guarantee live arrival.
